A short piece I wrote, What “Next of Kin” Means, was published in the New York Times as part of its series Room for Debate. The forum is titled, Family Ties, Without Tying the Knot. Each of the participants contributed a short piece on the legal implications of relationships based on something other than marriage. My piece explores ways our limited understanding of kin can lead to difficulties and complications for families that don’t fit the traditional heterosexual models.
I am very proud to be in the company of my old friend and colleague Kevin Maillard who organized the discussion, as well as Katherine Franke and Leah Ward Sears, who I have long admired. The other contributors are Robin Fretwell Wilson and Laura Rosenbury.
